These pictures of wave-world are field ion microscopy, or 'fim', images; nature "caught in the act" of becoming itself. At the center of each image, you're looking at the point of a needle 1000 times sharper than a common sewing needle. These "needles" are constructed from the substance indicated. Top left is aluminum. Top right is a custom alloy. Bottom left is tungsten. Bottom right is platinum. The white dots represent the respective atoms.
